Hermes tells Calypso to let Odysseus go. He is in awe of the beauty and isolated paradise that Calypso had built.

He almost reaches Phaecia, but Poseidon spots him and sends a storm.
Odysseus encounters Ino and she gives him a scarf to wrap around his body to keep him alive. Athena grants him calm winds. He clings to a plank, but eventually has to swim all the way to shore.
Athena helps him find a place to rest by the mouth of a river. He gets out of the water, throws the scarf into the sea, and hides in some bushes to sleep.
Characters
Calypso
A beautiful sea nymph. Captures Odysseus. Her house is very beautiful. She has an affair with Odysseus, showing the difference between physical and mental love.

Hermes is the Greek messenger. He is in awe of Calypso's wondrous paradise. he seems to be a lesser of the gods, yet well known among many
Odysseus
Odysseus is the main character of the story, and seems to be a troubled hero. He shows how the ancient Greeks had different gender views. He cheats on his wife while he is away, but his wife waits at home, denying all the suitors.
Themes
Men and Women ~ Calypso speaks of double standards between men and women gods that have multiple spouses. Odysseus does not remain loyal to Penelope.
Relationships ~ Odysseus cheats on Penelope, but his mental love with her lasts longer than that with Calypso.
Book 6
Plot

In the dream, the friends tells her that when she gets married, she must be able to wash her own clothes and that she should go to the river to learn how to.
The girls bathe in the river and have fun. When they are through bathing and washing their clothes, they play ball. They through the ball off of a hill, and Odysseus hears their screams of worry.
Odysseus wonders weather or not the girls or nymphs or human and decided to confront Nausicaa from afar. Athena gives her courage to stay.
Odysseus tells Nausicaa that she is a beautiful woman and begs her for a place to stay and clothing.
Odysseus bathes. Athena makes him more handsome, taller, and stronger than before. Nausicaa says that she wants him/a man like him as a husband.
Nausicaa gives instructions to Odysseus to get to her town and parents palace, so people aren't suspicious of them together and so that people will not envy her being with a man from out of town. Also, being with a new man walking about may ruin her reputation. He must go to her father's country house then someone will guide him to the palace. He would then talk to the queen there.
Characters
Nausicaa is a Phaeacian princess. She has many brothers and is of the age to get married. We can get a sense of a strange relationship of her father, uncomfort?
Odysseus is once again shown to be a charmer and have actions that are contradicting to his marriage with Penelope. He compliments Nausicaa's beauty multiple times.
