Oxytocin promotes social bonding in dogs
Introduction
Sociability has evolved to help reduce individuals risk from danger or to increase their chances of finding and defending their food
social behaviors are affected by how strong the social bond is
The brain system helps animals create relationships with other group member
Researchers then focused on OT, this helps regulate a variety of behaviors such as pair bonding, sexual behavior, peer recognition, and much more
OT has played other roles in social behavior and cognition is humans and animals
Oxycontin Enhances
in- group cooperation
Trusting behavior
generosity
it modulates emotion
Purpose
The main goal of this study is to determine whether OT can help modulate the maintenance of having a social bonds in a non reproductive context
Methods
OT was collected from urine samples before before performing any studies
Once given OT the dogs were placed in a room with their owners and other pets to observe their behaviors
Results
OT spray increased plasma OT within the dogs
dogs sprayed with OT were more drawn to their owners rather than those sprayed with saline
As seen with the dogs vs owners, dogs sprayed with OT were also more engaged with other dogs rather than sprayed with saline
Discussion/Conclusion
With OT the dogs had higher levels of affiliation, social interaction, and social approach
based on this study, it shows that once OT levels are increased it enhances and maintains social behaviors within dogs
One Question
We know that when OT levels are increased it helps create social bonding but what if OT can be removed what will be the results?
