Research and Assessment 101
Week One
Main Topic of Discussion:
Students learning vs The grade
Why We Assess Students
:
helps students continue to learn
makes the learning visible for students
improve the quality of the lessons
evidence of students learning
to see if students are understanding the meterial
motivates students
Personal Reflection:
I believe assessment is crucial in education. Discussed during lecture time, the grade does not matter, it is more effective for the students to see where they did well, and where they can improve. I believe assessment motivates students to set learning goals, and I believe a grade eliminates goals, especially when low.
Week Two
Main Topic of Discussion
: Areas We Assess
Knowledge: Comprehend and understand the meaning
Thinking: using reasoning to defend thinking or determine the explanation
Application: use the appropriate representation for information
Communication: their ability to communicate their thinking
Personal Reflection:
The practice of the assessment activity we did in class allowed me to explore how assessment is explained surrounding the four foundations of assessment. I was able to see how this is communicated through report cards which was so helpful.
Achievement Chart
: a layout of expectations for every subject allows me as the educator to practice high quality assessment. The chart allows the educator to create student success criteria based on the four foundation of assessment
Week Four
Main Topic of Discussion:
Different forms of assessment
Rubrics: Guides your teaching and future instruction , Provides feedback in a timely and consistent way assesses overall goals that encompass the curriculum expectations
Data Collection: process of gathering information in a variety of ways (formative, observation, summative etc.)This data allows teachers to monitor, assess, and evaluate student progress.
Self and Peer Assessment: tools that allow students to monitor their own or their peer's progress based on the specific success criteria
Checklist: Quick and simple form of assessment and to monitor progress based on measurable performance criteria
Anecdotal Notes: record multiple different things such as students’ learning, behaviour, attitudes etc. They can show learning processes over a period of time.
Personal Reflection:
Personally, I felt the Self and Peer assessment have the ability to enhance students learning and motivates students to create learning goals based on the success criteria. I also think this form of assessment fosters responsibility, respect, kindness, and self-regulation.
Week Three
Main Topic of Discussion:
The Kindergarten Program
Stronger focus on making the learning visible provides foundation for assessment at this age
Personal Reflection:
Coming from an ECE background, I stress the importance of pedagogical documentation as assessment as it truly does make learning visible. Children are learning through inquiry and exploration at this age so analyzing their learning is so important.
Pedagogical Documentation becomes the foundation of assessment
document and reflect on what the child does, what they say, what the represent while involved in play based learning
requires educators to gather and interpret learning moments and demonstrate how these learning moments relate to knowledge and skill
Week Five
Main Topic of Discussion:
Using Assessment and Feedback to Improve Students learning
Personal Reflection:
As a teacher candidate, I have always practiced the process of starting with something student does well followed by needs for improvement. This is why I think feedforward is so essential for feedback and assessment. I think feedforward has a stronger impact to motivate student to improve or meet learning goals.
Formative Assessment and how it improves learning and teaching: ongoing exchanges meaning teaching is co-learning with the students in order to vigorously meet the students' learning needs
Using the ten principles to
feedforward
rather than feedback (without the grade)
Week Six
Main Topic of Discussion:
Assessment in Writing
Promoting success in writing for students
Personal Reflection:
I think assessment of writing highly includes the student as it allows them to observe and reflect on their own writing approaches, and allows them to double check their work and observe what may have been missed, using self-assessment to produce a final correct product
Assess strengths and weaknesses
Reinforcement as a way of assessing
Assessing the writing process: Does the student plan, do they correct, what strategies are being used, etc
The video shown in this week's lecture was eye opening. Hearing the impact of teaching and assessment from a students perspective was refreshing. Allowed me to re-think the way I approach assessing students- always keep it positive.
