6-36 MONTHS
What is expected to do : Oral language as the foundation to literacy skills // facial expression, gestures and body movements to communicate // carry, hold, turn pages in books // points, learn, name objects or words with meaning // read aloud familiar passage with recognizable simple words // writing: begins to scribble // reads and coordinates pictures to words independently // recites and repeats phrases
anticipatory guide : respond to the child action of gesturing or reading // include reading and writing activities in family routine (bedtime story), repeat the same book, explain pics, words repeatly when not understand, try asking wh questions,
3 - 5 Y
what to expect : reads the same books but longer with many more complicated words // retells story // write name // learns letter recognition and speech sounds // writing strings of letters // able to scribble words they can spell or read PRINT AWARENESS - knows the convention of prints (read left to right, recognize some letters independently, can recognize and produce different or distinct words
