Endocardium (simple squamous epithelium and thin layer of connective tissue; deep to myocardium, lines the heart, covers the valves)
Conduction System
Specialized cardiac muscle cells carry impulses throughout heart (contraction): starts at sinoatrial node(pacemaker) and spreads throughout myocardium through gap junctions in intercalated discs; impulses continue traveling along an internodal pathway to atrioventricular node(delay of impulses for a 0.1second occur); continue to run through AV bundle (divides into left and right bundle branches in the interventricular septum); bundles terminate in the Purkinje fibers.
Pericardial Membranes
Serous pericardium: parietal and visceral/epicardium, part of the heart wall, (S.S.E. plus areolar C.T.)
Pericardial cavity (between parietal and visceral layers): filled with serous fluid to reduce friction between heart and nearest organs
Fibrous pericardium (outer layer): strong layer of D.I.C.T.; location: from diaphragm to roots of large vessels; function: keeps heart in place and overfilling.
