The Destruction of the Old Regime
The first act of the National Assembly was to demolish/destroy/forget the relics of feudalism and/or aristocratic privileges
August 4th, 1789
Abolished seigneurial rights as well as the fiscal privileges of nobles clergy, towns and provinces
August 26th, 1789
Adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen
Started with "the natural and impresciptible rights of man" to "liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression"
Also
reaffirms the destruction of
aristocratic practices by proclaiming an end to
exemptions from taxation, freedom, and equal rights for all men
Olympe de Gouges
Refused to accept the exclusion of women from political rights
Then
wrote the Declaration of the Rights of Women
and the Female Citizen
Got completely ignored by the National Assembly
October 5, 1789
Thousands of Parisian women marched to Versailles armed with pikes, lances, swords, pistols, and muskets
Versailles is where their former king, Louis XVI, lives
Forced him to move to Paris
After much hesitation, Louis eventually signs the Rights of Man
July 1790
The Civil Constitution of Clergy was put into effect
Bishop and Priests of the Catholic Church were to be elected by the people and paid by the state
