Process for Identifying Struggling Students
1. Identify Possible Struggling Student
Poor organization
Wanting to ignore difficult assignments
Student often "forgets" to do work
Refusal to finish work
2. Obtain Consent from Parents to Assess Student
3. Evaluate Student
Make sure the test is "full and individual"
The test must assess the following areas as found on the
Parent Center Hub website
:
Health
Vision and Hearing
Social and Emotional Status
General Intelligence
Academic Performance
Communicative Status
Motor Skills
4. Determine if Student Needs Special Education
5. Develop a Personal Learning Plan
What are the student's specific needs?
IEP
6. Implement Plan
7. Measure Progress
8. Reevaluate Student
IDEA states this should be done every 3 years at least
Parent Center Hub recommends the plan is reviewed at least once a year
Progress should be reported to the parents regularly
Obtain Parent's Consent
Ensure all participants understand
Does the student have a learning disability?
Are special education services required?
Emotional disturbances often occur
