Production Exam
Techniques
Strassberg
Similar to Stanislavski's technique but taken a step further, Strasberg's method involves the actors using “Substitution” to momentarily become the character they are trying to portray
Substitution is theatre refers to the understanding of the elements that can be compared in both the actors real life and the character they are portraying
An example of a strassberg technique is actors having to stay on stage as their character despite not having lines to say
Stanislavski
Stanislavski's technique involves the actor putting themselves in the shoes of their character to portray the right emotions on stage
We used these techniques to create hysteria, recursion and flashbacks
Meyerhold
This allowed the actors to improve on the overall look of the performance, using techniques such as precision, balance, coordination and rhythm.

These acting techniques were combined to enhance the idea of 'fear as a construct' for the audience to understand through the characters perspectives
Recursion
An example of recursion is the 000 call which is introduced in the begginning of the play but is then used again at the end of the play. Here, Angela is seen going back the Forge in the form of a memory from that night of the attack. Therefore, the audience realises that recursion is manipulated throughout the play.
The use of recursion in this performance is the idea that the plot can bend back on its self and repeat sequences. Forming a loop.
-
the nightmare on elm street, theme song in the beginning of the performance was also used in the last scene, reenforcing the idea of recursion
-
Staging
The story itself was set in a theatre, so a set design wasn't necessary. It would have been a distraction for the audience and for the actors who relied on telling the story through their monologues rather then a set and actions.
-
There was heavy isolation between characters as they were physically separated on stage, very little contact between characters. This enhanced the style of the play in the audiences eyes
The low lit stage creates fear within the audience and adds to the idea that anything could be lurking in the darkness
Characters
The characters in Trap was used to separate the play into sections, each scene and character came with their own backstory and which added to the connection that the audience was supposed to have with the actors.
Majority of characters were professionals mostly in the science field, as journalist's or as firefighters. This helped reassure the audience that they could trust the characters telling the story and that the information they were giving was legitimate.
Supporting characters were used for character and story building. An example for Kenosha would be Clifton (friend and possible love interest) and Kendra (her mother), both of these characters allow for Kenosha to build her back story
All characters interestingly had different perspectives on things; an example of this is Candelaria Ortiz who was able to connect things with her past experiences, whilst Anishay Lenser was very factual as she connected things through first hand experiences.
LFX, VFX, SFX
VFX
Interviews with actors were used to deliver information over different platforms rather then just real time acting on stage
The projections allowed the audience to follow the order of events in the story. This included the construction and hauntings of the Forge.
Documentary style to follow the serious structure of the performance and to add to the idea that 'fear is a construct'
SFX
Loud music to scare the audience and to make them feel like a part of the performance and emphasised recursion
-
Famous theme songs from iconic horror movies were used in the scene transitions as easter eggs for the audience to pick up on. The horror movies music concepts, related to the sections of Trap and layering the meaning
Example: the first scene, 'Picture of Infinity', uses the theme song from 'Nightmare on Elm Street' as the transition music. This is because it is known that there is an elm street in every American state and this enforcing the idea of infinity.
the same song plays again in the ending scene because of recursion.
-
LFX
Moments in time: shows the audience the focal point and whether they are watching a documentary or a point in real life.
Spotlights acted as a physical focus for the audience so they could concentrate on the the information the actors were giving rather than being distracted by actions or any movement around the speaker
'People are naturally scared of the dark' so using spotlights allows for the majority of the stage and theatre to be eclosed in darkness, and therefore unnerving for the audience to watch
