Jessi's Odyssey Book 7-8
Book 7
Plot
While heading to the palace, Odysseus is stopped by Athena disguised as a young girl. She offers directions to the palace. She covers him in mist so that the townsfolk will not be disturbed by the fact that he is an outsider. She also tells him to plea to the queen to get home. Athena then returns to Athens.
Odysseus is greeted by the feast of Poseidon and is in awe of the beauty of the palace granted by the gods.
Odysseus sees the queen and throws himself at her feet. The king wonders if he is a god, but Odysseus says that he is simply a mortal. He explains that he is away form home and the couple offers him a ship to go home in.
Later Arete recognizes the clothing and questions Odysseus further. He explains how he was captive and how he met Nausicaa all while with holding his name. He says that it was his idea not to go with N because he was embarrassed and nervous to see the king.
The king offers for Nausicaa to marry Odysseus, but it's okay if he does not.
Characters
Arete is the queen. She is described as forgiving and the daughter of the Nausithous's daughter Periboea.
Alcinous is the king. He is the uncle and husband to Arete and from what we can see has great wealth and connections with the gods.
Book 8
Plot
Alcinous calls the lords of Phaecia to celebrate their guest, Odysseus. At the same time, Athena calls out to the men of the town that a boat will need a crew of 52 men Alcinous also brings this to the attention of everyone and demands it.
Everybody eats, and afterwards the blind poet Demodocus sings about Odysseus' and Achille's quarrel. Odysseus begins to cry and Alcinous recommends that they play games outside. He wants Odysseus to remember his kingdom as the best at everything.
Sports like sprinting, wrestling, discus, and boxing are all included. Laodamas, the youngest son of Alcinous, invites Odysseus to join in and compete. Another son, Euraylus, suggests taunts that Odysseus is not athlete.
Odysseus gives an angry rant about how all people are given gifts by the gods and how beauty is only skin deep. In an angry rant, he throws the discuss further than anybody else. Athena, in a disguise congratulates him.
Demoducus sings another song about Aphrodite's and Ares' affair.
The Phaecian lords give gifts along with others who feed and bathe him as well.
Odysseus asks to hear about the Trojan horse and begins to weep (at part about the violence between him and Deiphobus). Alcinous sees and questions who he really is.
Characters
Demoducus is a blind poet. It is said that he has a god given talent and that the gods give him the skills to speak. The Muse loves him.
Aphrodite and Ares have an affair and are mocked by the other grecian gods.
Laodamas is the youngest son of Alcinous. He challenges Odysseus to a game. Said to have the best looks and be the strongest in their kingdom.
Euraylus, another son, is very arrogant. He taunts Odysseus for not being an athlete. Odysseus even uses him as an example of how looks are only skin deep. He is said to have the best looks and being the strongest after his brother.
