Major Functions
coordinate, control and regulate body functions
Major Organs
Pineal Gland
secretes melatonin
Pituitary Gland
Anterior Pituitary
secrete 7 different hormones, glandular tissue, effected by the hypothalamus to release hormones
Posterior Pituitary
secretes 2 hormones, stores hormones made in the hypothalamus. stimulates contraction of the uterus, antidiuretic hormone.
Hypothalamus
secretes peptide (releasing hormones) for cells in the anterior pituitary to release their hormones
secretes inhibiting hormones to stop the anterior pituitary releasing its hormones
Parathyroid Gland
secretes parathyroid hormone-increases blood calcium level when it detects its low
Thyroid Gland
largest gland in the body, secretes thyroid hormone-increases metabolic rate
Thymus
secretes thymic hormones. causes T lymphocytes to become immunocompetent (the ability to respond to a foreign cell-antigen)
Adrenal Glands
on top of kidney.
Adrenal Cortex
Zona Glomerulosa-secretes mineralocorticoids (steroid), makes your kidneys retain sodium and water
Zona Fasciculata-secretes glucocorticoids (sugar) helps maintain these levels
Zona Reticularis-secretes glucocorticoids and androgen--is converted in other tissues testosterone and estrogen
Pancreas
contains both endocrine and exocrine cells
Alpha Cells-secrete glucagon (increase blood glucose)
Beta Cells-secrete insulin (decrease blood glucose)
Gonads
Ovary-estrogen and progesterone
Testis-testosterone
Endocrine glands are made up of epithelial tissue. Endocrine glands travel in the blood stream
Types of Hormones in the Major Organs-chemical messenger that travels in the blood stream
Prolactin-mammary glands to produce milk
Thyroid Hormone
Gonadotropins
Calcitonin-produced by the thyroid, active only in children--decreases osteoclast activity
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone
Parathyroid Hormone
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
Zona Glomerulosa, Zona Fasciculata, Zona Reticularis
Growth Hormone-stimulates the growth of all cells and epiphyseal plate
Thymic Hormones
Other Organs that contain Endocrine Cells
heart
ANP-stimulates loss of salts and fluids through sodium rich urine
gastrointestinal tract
secretes hormones to regulate the digestive system
placenta
secretes pregnancy hormones
kidneys
secretes renin and erythropoietin
skin
vitamin D
