Behavior Interventions: Student 1: "Off-Task Disruptive"
Characteristics of the Behavior:
Annoying other students
Constant need to be of of his chair/moving around
Constant commenting/talking out of turn
Not following the lesson/tasks at hand
Not staying focused
Tier 1 Interventions
1- Explain the assignment:
repeat instructions and use eye contact. Check back in on the student to make sure he is following the task.
2-Try to ignore:
don't react to the constant disruptions or engage and try to stand your ground (this could be for attention). Reward the student with praise when they do something right.
3-Use logical consequences and take away privileges:
Phrase consequences with 'when' sentences so that the student feels they are making a choice. For example "When you take things from your friend's desk you have to sit with me at lunch."
4-Redirection:
Redirect students so that they know what they should be doing when you realize they are off task.
5-Rewards and Praise:
When you notice the student is doing a good job and staying on task, reward this.
6-Speak Directly:
Talk to the student one on one about their behavior. This can be done outside of class. The student can also 'have a break' to collect themselves and calm down.
7- Turn the Desk:
By turning the desk around, the student's belongings are now not in reach and are therefore not a distraction for the student to play with.
Tier 2 Interventions
4- Visible Schedules:
This can be for the whole class or directed individually for the student in question. The student will know how to deal with time management.
5- Use Mentoring:
This give the student positive motivation
2- Check In/ Check Out System:
Student checks in with the teacher at the beginning of each lesson to get special goals for the day and checks out to go over progress at the end of the lesson.
6-Teach Relaxation Skills:
focus on breathing or finding something to bring the student's focus back.
1- Behavior Contracts and Behavior Intervention Plans
: After Tier 1 strategies haven't seen any outcome, moving on to Tier 2 and start a behavior plan by implementing a Behavior Contract in which students agree to try to solve their problems.
3- Involve the Guidance Counselor:
At this point, more assistance is needed.
Tier 3 Interventions
1- Collaboration with Student's Physician:
This step is one of the last steps and should only be done with Parent Consent. It helps give teacher's insight as to if there are other factors involved.
2- Implement Numerous Organizational Tools:
These range from schedules, timers, folders, cupboards, etc. to help students stay on task.
3-Use Structured Time Outs:
These aren't necessarily punishments as much as they can help a student to calm down and regain their focus. They can be done both in and out of the class.
Data Tracking Strategies
