Psychosexual Stages
Oral
This stage happens in infancy and it is explained by infants continuously placing things in their mouths as a way to explore the world.
-
Anal
This stage occurs between the ages of one and a half and two and a half. At this time children learn that they can control their bodily functions.
-
Phallic
This stage can lead to several disorders later in life including depression, excessive guilt and anxiety.
This stage occurs at age 3 and it is when children start to notice the physical differences between the two sexes.
Children tend to form stronger bonds with their parent of the opposite sex and can even go as far as to feel aggression towards the parent of the same sex. (Oedipus Complex and Elektra Complex)
Latency
This stage occurs around the age of five or six. During this stage, children have stopped frequent conflict with their parents and they have begun to repress their aggressive urges.
During this period impulses and emotions remain hidden, or unconscious.
Genital
This stage happens during puberty! During this stage there aren't any new psychological conflicts, rather the person becomes more aware of their gender identity.
Normally, the conflicts of the earlier stages will resurface.
