- - - - The Story of Low was super interesting. I really don't have alot of knowledge on the main subjects of this movie, Illegal Arms Trading. The whole, life of crime thing, has always been an interest of mine (though never seriously considers;) and I guess what really interests me is how, not specifically arms, but Illegal business dealings work in general. Its very interesting how you can run a business, but completely free of rules, without taxes, and without governments (or with them). This is why I love the show Narcos as well as LoW. Anyway, Following this movie, I was interested in how real this story was. So I began to do some research.

        He was arrested in Thailand in 2008 before being extradited in 2010 to the United States to stand trial on terrorism charges after having been accused of intending to smuggle arms to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) for use against U.S. forces.[1][2][3] On 2 November 2011, he was convicted by a jury in a Manhattan federal court of conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens and officials, delivery of anti-aircraft missiles, and providing aid to a terrorist organization.[4][5]
        
        A former Soviet military translator,[6] Bout had reportedly made a significant amount of money through his multiple air transport companies,[7] which shipped cargo mostly in Africa and the Middle East during the 1990s and early 2000s.[8] Bout was equally willing to work with Charles Taylor in Liberia, the United Nations in Sudan, and the United States in Iraq,[7][9] and he may have facilitated huge arms shipments during the 1990s into various civil wars in Africa with his private air cargo fleets.[10]

        Bout's nickname, "Sanctions Buster", is due to his being implicated of facilitating the violation of UN arms embargoes in Angola, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of Congo during the 1990s.[35] Bout's air freight companies provided service to the French government,[20] the UN,[27][36] and the U.S.[27][36][37] Bout has reportedly shipped flowers,[29] frozen chicken,[7][29] UN peacekeepers,[29] French soldiers, and African heads of state.[20]

        Charles McArthur Ghankay Taylor (born 28 January 1948) is a former Liberian politician who was the 22nd President of Liberia, serving from 2 August 1997 until his resignation on 11 August 2003.[1]
        
        Charles McArther Emmanuel,[1] also known as Chuckie Taylor (born 1978), is the son of Charles Taylor, the former President of Liberia.[2] Raised by his mother in Florida until he was 17, Taylor Jr. traveled to Liberia in 1994 to live with his father, who in turn enrolled him in the Accra Academy, an elite boarding school in Ghana.[3] He later attended the College of West Africa in Monrovia. During his father's presidency, Emmanuel became the commander of the infamously violent Anti-Terrorist Unit (ATU), commonly known in Liberia as the "Demon Forces". He is currently serving a 97-year sentence back in Florida for his role in human rights violations carried out by the ATU.
        
        Born in 1977 in Boston, Emmanuel lived much of his life in Orlando, Florida, with his mother, Bernice Emmanuel, a college girlfriend of Taylor. Fearful of Taylor's attempting to claim custody of Emmanuel, his mother had his name legally changed to Roy Belfast, Jr., the name of her husband. His house, in a neighborhood described as "middle class," was 9 miles (14 km) away from Universal Orlando Resort.[2][4]

        Initially, Emmanuel pursued a career in the timber trade before establishing and commanding the Anti-Terrorist Unit (ATU) to serve as his father's personal security force.[3] According to US prosecutors, when in Liberia Emmanuel headed the "Demon Forces", a paramilitary, anti-terrorism security unit for Charles Taylor.
        
        Elise Keppler, a counsel for the International Justice Program of Human Rights Watch, said that the "Demon Forces" "did things like beating people to death, burying them alive, rape - the most horrible kind of war crimes."
        
        Taylor escaped undetected from the United States and shortly thereafter it is believed that he reached Libya. He took part in guerrilla training under Muammar Gaddafi, becoming Gaddafi's protégé.[14] Eventually, he left Libya and traveled to the Ivory Coast, where he founded the National Patriotic Front of Liberia

        According to a 2 June 1999 article in The Virginian-Pilot,[18] Taylor had extensive business dealings with American televangelist Pat Robertson during the civil war. He gave Robertson the rights to mine for diamonds in Liberia. According to two Operation Blessing pilots who reported this incident in 1994 to the Commonwealth of Virginia for investigation, Robertson used his Operation Blessing planes to haul diamond-mining equipment to his new mines in Liberia. At the same time, Robertson was telling his 700 Club viewers that the planes were sending relief supplies to the victims of the genocide in Rwanda. The subsequent investigation by the Commonwealth of Virginia concluded that Robertson diverted his ministry's donations to the Liberian diamond-mining operation. Attorney General of Virginia Mark Earley blocked any prosecution against Robertson, as the relief supplies were also sent.[19]

        Less than two weeks after Hurricane Katrina killed 1,836 people, Robertson implied on the September 12th broadcast of The 700 Club that the storm was God's punishment in response to America's abortion policy.
        
        After the official end of the civil war in 1996, Taylor ran for president in the 1997 general election. He campaigned on the notorious slogan "He killed my ma, he killed my pa, but I will vote for him."

        Due to a UN embargo against arms sales to Liberia at the time, these weapons were largely purchased on the black market through arms smugglers such as Viktor Bout.
        
        Taylor obtained spiritual and other advice from the evangelist Kilari Anand Paul.[25] As president, he was known for his flamboyant style.[26] Upon being charged by the UN of being a gunrunner and diamond smuggler during his presidency, Taylor appeared in all-white robes and begged God for forgiveness, while denying the charges.[26] He was reported to have said that "Jesus Christ was accused of being a murderer in his time.
        
        Sarkis Garabet Soghanalian (Armenian: Սարգիս Սողանալեան; February 6, 1929 – October 5, 2011), nicknamed Merchant of Death, was an international private arms dealer who gained fame for being the "Cold War's largest arms merchant"[1] and the lead seller of firearms and weaponry to the former government of Iraq under Saddam Hussein during the 1980s.[2]
        
        Prior to the beginning of the Persian Gulf War, Soghanalian appeared in several television interviews, explaining in detail the work he had done in Iraq, along with naming several top American government officials who were involved in the arms transactions.
        
        In an interview with 60 Minutes, Soghanalian stated that top-level American officials were aware from the beginning of his deals in Iraq. These included former U.S. President Richard Nixon, former Vice-President Spiro Agnew, Nixon's chief of staff Colonel Jack Brennan and attorney general John N. Mitchell. Encouraged by other senior officials, Nixon had written a letter on his behalf to expedite the sale of the uniforms to Iraq. Soghanalian remarked that "They were not only in the uniform business. They would sell their mothers if they could, just to make the money."[9] He also predicted that the ensuing war between Coalition troops and Iraq would turn into a lengthy and costly conflict, much like the Iran–Iraq War. This assertion ultimately proved incorrect as Coalition troops rapidly ejected the Iraqi army from Kuwait in February 1991.

        Soghanalian was born to an Armenian family in what was then French mandate Syrian Iskanderun (now part of Turkey). In late 1939, his family moved to Lebanon to avoid persecution from the Turks. Due to the poor economic conditions his family lived in at the time, he decided to drop out of high school and joined the French Army and served in a tank division. It was from his experience in the military that brought him into the world of weaponry and, in his words, he "adapted to it from childhood and kept going."[1]
