- - - - Before Castro, ordinary Cubans lived a tough life with long hours and low pay
      - The 1952 election never happened because Fulgencio Batista declared himself dictator

      - People from the old regime were executed and new plans to build 7,000 schools & 3x more hospitals were introduced after the revolution

      - America then built naval bases in Cuba and invested heavily in Cuban industries
      - In 1952 the U.S. helped the Cuban military officer Batista to power
      - Batista was corrupt, repressive & a symbol of U.S. control of Cuba
      - The main exports from the country were tobacco & sugar

      - Joined a youth movement, campaigned against political corruption
      - In 1952 became a politician
    - - Because Castro nationalised American companies, the U.S. wanted to get rid of Castro
        
        The U.S. didn't like the money staying in Cuba so wanted to overthrow the new regime
      - In 1961 a small force of Cuban exiles landed in Cuba but Cuban forces stopped the invasion
      - Highly embarrassing for USA & JFK
        
        The result of this event caused developing nations saw the U.S. as an imperialist nation
        
        Also made Castro look strong and set an example for developing world
      - Pushed Cuba to seek support from Soviet Union as protection from the U.S.
