Some felt that the reformation of the church wasn't protestant enough, this group was called the Puritans, they thought there were too many traces of Catholicism in the church. while most Puritans were moderates some wanted more extreme changes to the church.
what they wanted - no rings in marriage, no signing of the cross at baptism, no bowing to Jesus, no wearing vestments, more emphasis on explaining the bible, educated clergy, some extremists wanted a no bishops system.
On his way to accept the crown James was presented with a petition signed by 1000 puritan Clergymen this was known as the Millenary petition this contained a list of moderate requests for the church reforms. he meets the petitioners at the Hampton Court Conference in Jan 1604. the Petitioners showed loyalty to James they accepted that only the king could alter the church.
positives- conference was organised, bible was written in English, reduced pluralism, moderates mostly happy, James sees himself as peacekeeper.
Negatives - not all demands are met ( no elimination of rings and ritualistic actions), bishops and hierarchy system not eliminated "no bishop no king"rule, James asked all those who weren't happy to leave the church

Armenians
They wanted a high church with ceremonies and who did not attack the Roman Catholic church as strongly as most protestants did.
they believed that ceremonies , statues and bowing at the name of Jesus were vital parts of the church. they were hated by the Calvinist Puritans majority of the church of England. To Puritans their service seemed like a return to traditions of the roman Catholic Church.
James favored the high church Armenian group within the church of England. they stressed the divine right of king. Charles quickly prompted William laud the leading Armenian by 1628 he was bishop of London.
Richard Montague- Anglican bishop attempted to seek a middle road between road between roman Catholic and Calvinists. Published a new gag for an old Goose which argued Puritanism was a subversive.
