Plastic Pollution
Plastic?
Plastics are a type of synthetic polymer found in certain types of clothes, bottles, bags, food wrappings and containers
-
Macro plastic
large visible debris including nets, buoys, buckets and trash that has not degraded
Macro plastic debris can be degraded and broken down into micro-plastic debris by UV radiation and the action of waves
Plastics in the Ocean
-
To marine animals?
Both micro and macro plastic debris are ingested by marine animals which mistake the debris for food :
Damage the stomach of animals or cause them to stop feeding by taking up space in the digestive tract
-
Bio Magnification
Some toxins build up in the body of organisms particularly if the toxin is fat-soluble and not easily excreted
-
Real World Problems
- Plastic ingestion by the leatherback turtle
-
Ingestion of the plastic can be fatal to turtles because the plastic can be lodged in the oesophagus and can cause future feeding problem.
Plastic debris can also become wrapped around the turtle which restricts the movement and developmental growth
Estimating more than 100,000 sea turtles and other marine animals are suffered due to macro-plastic debris each year
- Marine Plastic and the Laysan albatross
-
The Laysan albatross is a large marine bird that nets on the island of Midway Atoll in the Pacific Ocean
The North Pacific Gyre contacts the shore of the island transporting large volumes of plastic onto its beaches
