Fire
-
-
-
Fire is an integral part of the Australian environment. Native vegetation is a high fibre content which fuels bushfires.
A fire may be destroy our environment, but they have positive long-term effects.
Cleaning the Forest Floor: removes low-growing underbrush, cleans the forest floor of debris, opens it up
to sunlight, and nourishes the soil.
Providing Habitat: Shelter to forest animals and birds. Fire clears wildlands of heavy brush, leaving room for new flora and fauna.
Killing Disease: Fire kills diseases and insects that prey on trees and provides valuable nutrients that enrich the soil.
New Generations: Change is important to a healthy forest. Some species of trees and plants are actually fire dependent.
Seasons
Indigenous Australians understand the seasons and natural changes that occur throughout, to use it to their advantage.
Prior to European Settlement, the Indigenous people would move to the 'river plains' to take advantage of flowing water
-
By early 'March' the weather got cooler, causing people to descend to the rivers to the river and plains areas.
Prior to departing, the dry grasses would be set alight to create regeneration for the following year.
-
Flood
Floods are part of the natural water cycle. Land that borders waterways such as rivers, creeks, lakes, and swamps form a natural floodplain. the size of floodplains varies from few hundred metres to hundreds of km.
-
Stream erosion is a natural process, particularly around bends. changes in land adjacent to a stream, however, can lead to instability and result in continuous erosion along its channel.
Impervious surfaces
Areas that have been covered by any material that impedes the infiltration of water onto the soil
Migration
-
Immigration is the movement of people into another country or region to which they are not native in order to settle there.
Emigration is leaving one's country or region with the intent to settle permanently in another country.
Some migration patterns are linked to climate and food availability, while others relate to breeding seasons and habitat change.
Drought
Based on climate records for the past 100 years, on average in for every 10 years there will be three years of drought.
Drought is a prolonged dry period when the amount available water is insufficient to meet our normal use.
Human interactions with the environment can impact greatly on whether an area is considered to be drought affected.
What impact does drought have?
- erosion
- food shortages
- food price increase
- threat of bushfires
- toxic algae outbreaks
Tides
-
Effect of a tide on people
• Vessels -
Many boats, for instance, dock at ports during high tide but move too far up toward the shore so that at low tide the vessel is stranded on the sand.
Relationship between the moon and tidal flow
The combined effects of gravitational forces exerted by the moon, the sun and rotation of earth make up tides which are the rise and fall of sea levels. The relationship between the moon and tidal flow is how when the moon circles earth gravity pulls waters of the sea and towards it which then makes up tides which can be separated in 4 zones.
