5.4 The Kingdom of God and the Lord's Prayer
The Kingdom of God
Jesus wasn't referring to a place but to the idea of God's sovereignty and authority
"The time is fulfilled and the Kingdom of God has come near: repent and believe in the God news"
- Mark 1:15
The kingdom will come at the end of time when God comes to power and all people enjoy the eternal happiness of heaven
The Lord's Prayer
Called that because Jesus taught it to his disciples
Meaning
Hallowed by thy name
When believers pray God's name is accepted as holy, they refer to all God
When people respect the otherness, majesty and holiness of God, the importance of God is recognised in their lives, then they are accepting the call to become members of his kingdom
Give us this day our daily bread
Daily bread is an ask for survival not for luxuries. Here people ask for God to remove luxuries to focus more on God
Our Father, Who art in haven
Shows Jesus' intimate relationship with God, the father. Jesus wants his followers to have the same relationship
Deliver us from evil
The evil one is trying to prevent the growth of the kingdom of God. The prayer accepts that humans need help to resist temptation and with God's grace it will happen
5.5 Signs of the Kingdom: justice, peace and reconciliation
Peace
A state of total trust and unity between all people
Flow from justice, the removal of all tensions that are caused by suspicion, resentment and mistreatment
"It's my duty to build bridges and to help all men and women, in any way possible to do the same"
-Pope Francis
Reconciliation
(1) Restoring harmony after relationships have been broken down
(2) A sacrament in the Catholic Church
Those who've been reconciled can learn to appreciate each other more because hay learn to accept and live with their differences, without their being any tension
Willing to accept the past has happened but that it shouldn't have happened and requires people to learn from the past
Justice
It ensures all people have what they are entitled to as human beings. Injustices create divisions and resentment
"goods created by God for everyone should infect each everyone"
- Catechism of the Catholic Church
Bringing about what is right and fair, according to the law or making up for the wrong that has been committed
Christians believe the Kingdom of God is a perfect kingdom, where all things that go against God have been removed- Christians aims should be to help the Kingdom grow
5.6 The hierarchy of the Catholic Church and the Second Vatican Council
Hierarchy of the Church
St Peter
Pope
Cardinals
Bishops
Priests
Deacons
Lat people
"You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church"
Matthew 16:18-19
Second Vatican Council
Pope John XXII called the council in 1962 as the Church was too cut off from the world.
Changes were made to the way the service was run
Four document were produced
Dei Verbum
. (The word of God)
Dealt with the importance of scriptures. We should take the scriptures seriously but not literally
Lumen Gentium
. (On the Church)
This stressed that all members of the Catholic Church are important and equal, emphasises the importance of the Catholic Church, modernising its ways but also defending itself from attacks of modern society
Sacrosanctum Concilium
(On the sacred liturgy)
Stressed the importance of allowing people to get involved in the worship of God, during mass. Included hearing mass in their own language and adapting it to their own culture
Gaudium et Spes
(The Church in the Modern World)
The Church should be working with its people to help guide politics, economics and technological advances in the world
5.1 Pilgrimage and the Stations of the Cross
Stations of the Cross
They show Jesus' final journey to the cross
Form of
dramatised prayer
During lent Catholics make the stations of the cross (walk through each one and say a prayer)
Physical movement allows the person praying to maintain focus
Way of accompanying Jesus on his journey
e.g.
(1)
Jesus is condemned to die
(9)
Jesus falls for the third time
Pilgrimage
People think of it as a movement forward to a final destination
Christians believe they are on their way to meet God at death - therefore they're daily prayers and actions should reflect the idea of making progress.
A Christian who sees life as a Pilgrimage will do their best to ensure all those they meet are toughed by their sense of purpose and the presence of God, which is reflected in their attitude and actions
Pilgrimage to Jerusalem
Many don't have the money or the time to visit Jerusalem
For them making the stations of the cross allows them to follow Jesus' footsteps in spirit
Those who go make the Stations of the Cross on the Via Dolorosa, they also visit his tomb, where he was buried and rose again
Allows Catholics to renew their faith and commitment to Jesus
5.3 Mission and evangelism in drama
Showing it through drama
Examples of films
The Mission
From 1986 reflects the 18th century situation in South America- Europeans were trying to enslave the native Americans and Christian monasteries were trying to convert them to Christian
Shows the power of faith and forgiveness
Example of when this is shown
The priests were ordered by their bishops to abandon the native people to the slavers for political reasons, however, the priests rejected these orders in favour of following their conscience
Les Miserables
By French writer VictorHugo
Centred round the powers of love and forgiveness
One persons kind act can have major effects on others lives
Reflects Christian duty to love all people
Example of when this is shown
Since Valjean broke his parole from prison, he is a wanted man. Javert his former jailer, constantly chases him, not being willing to forgive him, believing that no man can change. Javert is then captured by revolutionaries, who ask Valjean to kill him. Valjean chooses to let him go free
They help people to relate to how the message is both received and ignored
Evangelism is preaching of the gospel, particularly in words
Some films implicitly shows the message of Christianity, while others show it explicitly
