Truman notes
Setting
The word seahaven is symbolic, haven meaning safe
-
-
‘Seahaven is the way the world should be’, ‘As truman grew up we were forced to manufacture ways to keep him on the island.’
PAIRING DIALOGUE WITH CAMERA SHOTS
-
Utopia turns into a dystopia -Happy place turns into an actual prison. This helps to understand prison imagery (guard dog, patrol, lights, perimeter around Truman)
Setting it littered with cameras) when Truman dissapears
(shows the idea/theme of imprisonment)
Establishing shot of houses - american dream (2.5 children, white picket fence, everything is the same, set as utopia) this is unrealistic and doesn’t represent the real world -
Techniques
Mise en scene
mugs, calendars, pillows, The dome (imagery)
is a glorified prison - establishing shot, extreme long shot, in dome shot Truman is wearing striped pj’s with vertical blinds. This shows how trapped he is. In baby, mum and daughter scene, drawings and montages of truman in their house and this shows how dominating the show and how much social media infiltrates our lives

-
Cinematography
Establishing long shots
ELS of the big houses, white fences and pretty roads
-
Use of cross cutting
-
-
audience watching like old ladies, people in bar, security guards
-
Dialogue
"what else it on"
-
How the Truman show was really just a show and when it ends people will still go on with their lives and find another show to watch
-
How is Truman voiceless
He is voiceless because he can’t talk to anyone without doing adverts, product sales or having scripted dialogue
- cameras are also on 24 hours a day so he doesn't have any privacy
This relates to a text to world type of thing where reality TV shows never give the contestents any privacy as the have the cameras all the time.
-
“You never had a camera in my head” - This dialogue indicates that christoff thinks he knows Truman better than Truman himself. Truman takes this as an advantage by vanishing in seahaven. With having 5,000 cameras they never had one in Trumans head.
Use of product selling
Use of zoom in shots show how everything is fake - selling products - Seahaven such an idealistic place, and giving Truman a rather good life, the makers of the reality TV programme are positioning the reality TV programme as a prime marketing avenue, due to its effectiveness as audiences aspire to live as people do in Seahaven.
