Identifying & Helping Struggling Students in my 1st & 2nd grade ESL/Phonics classes
Identifying
Students may act out when they are struggling
Students who don't often ask questions may be struggling but don't want others to know
Students struggle with reading
Students struggling with with reading often avoid reading
Often have trouble processing other forms of language (verbal instructions)

Helping
In the classroom
Differentiation
provide different homework assignments
test formats (multiple choice, oral, short answer, etc.)
Give small group instructions
Seating arrangements
Identify if students works best alone or with a partner/small group
Have TA work with struggling students
Giving Instructions
Give 1 instruction at a time
Have student repeat your instructions
Give a visual and clear instuctions
Repeat instructions in a different way before asking TA to translate for struggling students
At home
Provide parents with flashcards, study guides, or other materials to help their child study at home
Keep lines of communication open with parents (phone & email during office hours)
Reading & Phonics
Use songs

Use audiobooks when appropriate
Assign shorter texts for struggling students
Use movement/body language to help remember sounds of letters
Encourage students to 'sound it out'
