- - - - At dawn, near the end of the attack, Doss rescues Howell and the two finally escape Hacksaw under enemy fire.
  - - - He then torments Doss by putting him through grueling labor, intending to get Doss to leave of his own accord.
        
        Doss is assaulted and beaten by his fellow soldiers, but he refuses to say who attacked him, and continues with basic training.
        
        Doss has a lot of determination and perseverance. He also is forgiving and he even helps those who hurt him.
