The portrayal of the Americans vs. the portrayal of the Japanese…
The portrayal of the Americans vs. the portrayal of the Japanese
Japanese
They'd do anything, good or bad, for their country
would take their own life, just to end one americans life
dedicated to killing
Cruel and brutal
Faceless hordes of unknowable others
Demonised
Seek to kill medics
Ritual suicide
This portrays that the Japanese are ruthless and would rather die than lose, It also shows their commitment to their cause and that they are willing to do anything for their cause
Grotesque
Willing to kill themselves in order to take an American life.
Cocky
They are egotistic, their leader took his own life because the Americans won.
Can't handle losing
unpredictable
impudent
impertinent
overconfident
brazen
presumptuous
arrogant
insolent
bold
forward
Americans
Serving because others are serving and don't want to be at home safe while others are risking their life
Soldiers are supporting each other
Even though Desmond comes face to face with his enemy and the one trying to kill him (medics targeted) he is still able to show empathy and provide care to and equally as petrified Japanese
The Americans feel guilty if they don't serve, as they feel like they are not fighting for their own country. they can't just sit back and watch this happen.
They put on a 'front' pretending to be confident but in reality they've never been so scared
Traumatised
Desmond is portrayed in a different light after finally completing his 'purpose' and saving multiple wounded soldiers lives as he is finally brought back into the American 'safe zone' Desmond is paranoid and very cautious showing him in a new "traumatised" state as he reacts explosively when touched by another fellow American soldier
sympathetic
An American shaking in fear as another soilder comforts him
Excited about war
Are determined to support there country without knowing the full extent of the risks involved.
For example, both Doss brothers are determined to join the war, but their father is very against them going as he is aware of the risks and has first-hand experience of what war is actually like
Similarities
are both doing what they have been taught, although the Japanese have different strategies and are more cunning
They're all scared
Both want to win
They are both fighting for what they belive to be right
Both fighting for their countries and their families back home
