Mixtures
Distillation
-
-
- lowest boiling point evaporates first
- vapour is cooled, condenses and is collected
-
Fractional Distillation
-
- Stick fractionating column on top, then heat
- Different liquids have different boiling points
- Liquid with lowest boiling point evaporates first
- liquids with higher boiling point may evaporate but cooler at top so run down to the flask
- when first collected raise temperature for next
-
Chromatography
-
different dyes in ink
Paper Chromatography
-
-
- place in beaker of solvent
-
- Make sure ink isn't touching the solvent
- Place lid to stop evaporating
- solvent seeps up, carrying the ink with it
- Each dye will move at different rate and seperate out
- Any insoluble ink will not move
- When sovent reache near top, take out and let dry
- End pater called chromatogram
