Political Structure of Rome
Senate
The senate was a group of 300 men whose role was to advise the magistrates. However, they also had a strong influence on the way that Rome was governed.
You became a senator after holding a high position as a magistrate, so all senators were experienced. Once you became a senator, you held your position for life and did not have to worry about being re-elected.
Magistrates
There job was to look after the money of rome. They where also judges.
Consuls
Consuls were the leaders of Rome, they wore a white Toga with a purple stripe. Consuls kept many of the powers of the original Roman Kings in military, religious and legal areas including being commander in chief of the military.
The consuls power was still limited though because they were only elected for a one-year term and with two consuls each could act as a check on the power of the other.
Tribunes
They protected the ordinary people against unfair treatment.
The Tribunes were representatives of the Plebians.
Praetors
As the area controlled by Rome increased the consuls could not supervise all the administration so praetors took over the legal representatives of consuls.
When administration of the expanding republic became more complex, the number of praetors increased from four to six.
Quaesters
These were the treasurers who looked after finances. Two other officials held power on special occasions. If they needed to go somewhere else two other officials held power on special occasions.to go somewhere else two other officials held power on special occasions.
When Rome was under attack a single strong leader was needed. In this situation the two consuls could be replaced by a Director who held his position for only six months.
Aediles
Aediles were responsible for the administration of Rome and its buildings and religious festivals .
Aediles would often spend a lot of money on festivals and entertainment in the hope that this would help get them elected as Consuls
