Consequences of housing shortage in cities
Homelessness
Homeless people suffer from exposure to the cold, rain, hunger and lack of sleep
May also experience illnesses
Eg. Skin Infections, respiratory problems
Stress disorders
Def: Lack of shelter to sleep and carry out basic activities
Slums and squatter settlements
Poor living conditions
Lack of access to safe drinking water-->people use contaminated water from polluted rivers
Using contaminated water-->diseases like cholera and dysentery
Lack of proper garbage disposal system--> improper disposal of garbage--> clogged drains and sewers
-->produces breeding ground for mosquitoes which cause malaria and dengue
Overcrowding will worsen the spread of such diseases
Vulnerable to fires, landslides and eviction
Landslides
Landslides can destroy and bury everything in its path
cause injuries, death and loss of property
Eviction
Slums are built on land without permission
Residents may be forced out of their homes anytime--> lack of sense of security
Fires
Slum houses are often made of flammable materials like cardboard-->risk of fire is high
Fires will cause injuries, deaths and loss of property
Land pollution
Lack of a proper garbage disposal system -->dumping of garbage into open drains or outside houses
This will attract pests and generate a foul smell
Water pollution
Rivers near slums are badly polluted-->used for washing garbage and sewage disposal
Contaminants from sewage may seep into groundwater and pollute nearby water sources
