Eliezer
- main character (narrator)
- 15 years old when he and his family are captured and sent to a concentration camp
- was really religious in the beginning of the novel by slowly loses his faith
"Never shall I forget that night, the first night in a camp … never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust.” (p. 34)
Elie's father (Shlomo)
- aged 50 but lies about his age to survive
- dies in Buchenwald from starvation and dysentery
- stayed with Eliezer throughout the novel
“His last word had been my name. He had called out to me and I had not answered … if I could have searched the recesses of my feeble conscience, I might have found something like: Free at last!” (p. 112)

- loses her family on the train from Sighet
- she loses her mind and screams out about seeing flames on the train and others treat her badly

Juliek
- a musician Eliezer meets in Buna
- He plays his violin for the weary and dying after the march to Gleiwitz but then dies
