Early Life
He was born on the 27th of February 1902 in Salinas California.
His favourite book, and main influence on his writing, was Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur.
He went to Stanford University and during this time he worked as a laboratory assistant and farm labourer.
In 1925 he went to New York on a freighter boat, when he arrived in New York he began working as a reporter and joined a construction crew which built Madison Square Gardens. During this time he was also in the process of writing his first book, which turned out to be unsuccessful.
His Parents were John Ernst Steinbeck Sr. and Olive Hamilton. His father was a bookkeeper and an accountant. John received his love of literature from his mother.
He wanted to become an author when he was 14.
Overview
John Steinbeck is was an American author and won the Nobel Prize in 1962.
He was a major spokesman for the people of The Great Depression
He almost published a total of 30 books.
Writing Seriously
Steinbeck returned to California to start writing seriously.
He wrote a series of fiction, non fiction and short stories. E.g. The Pastures of Heaven, To a God Unknown, With Tortilla Flat etc. Each story had different messages.
He wrote a book called "The Grapes of Wrath" which won the Pulitzer Prize.
He wrote about his daily life and everything that was going on during the time he was alive e.g. The Great Depression
Other Subjects/ Later Decline
During World War II, Steinbeck worked as a foreign correspondent. Which then lead to the writing of "The Story of a Bomber Team", "Once There Was a War" and a couple more.
In the 1950s his stories began to become worse and he began to receive criticism for them.
But receive praise for winning the Nobel Prize in 1962.
