Human Respiratory System by Matthew and Jonas
Functions
Lungs
Contains alveoli which are covered in capillaries. The alveoli have pores which oxygen comes out from. The oxygen gets absorbed into the bloodstream and the carbon dioxide gets released into the trachea.
Windpipe/Trachea
Provides air flow to and from the lungs for respiration.
Diaphragm
The diaphragm is a muscle under the ribcage that moves down when we inhale (the lungs become larger in volume). It takes up the rest of the space when we exhale (the lung decreases in volume).
Bronchioles
Bronchioles control the flow of air as it makes its way to the alveoli. They split into two and into two, repeating many times. Each end is covered with alveoli.
Nostrils
Is the only part of the respiratory system exposed to the air. It is the first part of the respiratory system that air gets inhaled from and the last part of the respiratory system that air gets exhaled from.
Alveoli
Sends oxygen into it via its pore and diffuses into the bloodstream. The carbon dioxide from the bloodstream get diffused into the alveoli and out through the pore via the bronchioles, through the trachea and out of the nose.
