Caño Cristales River
colours
At first people thought that the vibrant colors came from the algae and the moss growing in the water. The actual reason is because of Macarenia clavigera, a unique type of plant that grows on the river bed
Macarenia clavigera require exact conditions, it needs the right level of water and specific amount of sunlight then it will turn brilliant red.

The green algae, blue water and yellow sand put together make a rainbow effect. Macarenia clavigera most commonly are red or into different shades of red from blood red to maroon. They are sometimes light pink and sometimes bright pink. The plant is sometimes also comes in different colors like bright green, blue, yellow and orange, giving the river a magnificent look.
These things happens for a short time in between wet and dry seasons for a few weeks from September to November, when the water level and sunlight is just right.
In June, the color is very soft, clear rose and plants are starting to grow, but with time and growth, the color becomes more intense.
