Significance Timelines
1955:
- Limited self-government was established
- LF formed coalition with the Allegiance Party
- David Marshall ( leader of LF ) became SG's first Chief Minister
1957
Second Merdeka Talk:
- Lim Yew Hock succeeded David Marshall as Chief Minister
- He led the second delegation to London
- He succeeded in securing internal self-government for SG from the British government
- it would be implemented in 1959
1959
Prep for Internal Self-government
- a general election was held on 30th May
- All 51 seats in the Legislative Assembly were contested and 525,000 people voted
- SPA (LF) won 4 out of 39 seats they contested for
- PAP won 43 out of 51 seats they contested for
1956:
Merdeka Week:
- LF launched the Merdeka Week campaign
- mass rallies were held
- flags with the message "End Colonialism Now" were distributed
First Merdeka Talk:
- LF government led the first delegation to London to negotiate for internal self-government for SG (led by David Marshall)
- The British did not agree
- David Marshall kept his priorly made promise and resigned as Chief Minister

After the Referendum
Results of Referendum
Singapore would be to merged with Malaysia, but also autonomy in labour, education and other agreed matters, and Singapore citizens would automatically become citizens of Malaysia
Majority of the people voted for option A, with 25% of the people casting blank votes (support Barisan Sosialis)
Operation Coldstore
2 February 1963:
ISC launched an island-wide arrest of those believed to be under communist influence
For example, key Barisan Sosialis leaders and trade union members like Lim Chin Siong and Fong Swee Suan were detained for being accused of trying formation of Malaysia and planning to launch an uprising in Singapore.
