Research
Hart and Risley (1995) conducted study to examine language use in homes of children with professional, working class parents compared to children from welfare-subsidized families
Conclusions:
- the parent's language ability reflected number, variety, and flexibility of coping with child's inattentiveness
-well-educated parents used choice instead of commands when dealing with their child
-well-educated parents also talked more to their children beyond what was necessary
-child stopped increasing in the amount they talked when they began to talk as much as other family members
-Once socioeconomic status was controlled, there was no significant link between race and amount of talk. Therefore, race is not a factor in determining amount of talk in a child
