Impact on Tourism Socio Cultural
Negative
Increasing crime problems
Tourists often carry valuable items with them. For example, credit cards, camera etc
Therefore, tourists are a easy target for scamming or cheating in 'tourists traps'.
Police are often deployed at 'tourists traps' to prevent conflicts between the locals and the tourists
Eg: In 2010, a women and several of her friends pretended to be police officers. They scammed a group of Japanese tourist for their credit card. They would use the credit cards to withdraw money for the ATM or but expensive goods.
Dilution of local customs and cultures
Older buildings may have to be converted to attract more tourists and new buildings are built to promote tourism.
This area focuses on commercial activities.
These activities might drive locals out of the area, causing the area to lose its identity.
Sometimes, festivals and religious rituals might be modified to suit the needs if a tourists. This causes the festivals and rituals to be commercialised and loses their authenticity and significance.
Eg: In Thailand, tourists pay an expensive entry fee to visit the village of the Kaya Lahwi. Some tourists expect to take pictures with the women in the village to justify their costly payment of the entry fee.
Positive
Preservation of Culture & local customs
the protection of the way people live, including their economic activities, traditional beliefs and religious practices.
When cultural and historical sites are preserved, it preserves the heritage and customs in these sites.
Helps tourists learn more about the history about a country. This would cultivate a strong sense of belonging to a country.
Revenue collected would fund the preservation and restoration of these site
Eg: Entry fees for the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt are used to fund conservation efforts.
Raise awareness of different cultures
Some cultures in a certain country might not be known around the world. Hence, tourism helps to discover certain types of unknown cultures.
Since the tourism industry is big, helping raise awareness about these cultures would allow people who travel there in the future to respect their culture
Eg: Some mountains in China are where unknown cultures are usually found. Over the years, more and more of these unknown cultures have been found and people now know how to respect their culture.
