MOTIVATIONAL FACTORS
extrinsic
if reward is given to frequently, it will be of less value to the athlete, and may lose its impact on performance.
intangible rewards are non- physical such as praise
tangible rewards are physical rewards, like money and medals,
someone's behaviour is influenced by external factors/
intrinsic
stimulation
Seeking an adrealine rush or some form of excitement
Knowledge
Being curious about performance; wanting to know more about it and to develop new techniques or skills that benefit their performance
Accomplishment
When athletes wish to increase their level of skill to get a sense of accmplishemt
Effect of the environment
the state of equipment, clean and tidy
quality of facilities and equipment can have an effect on motivation.
elite athletes are more likely to be provided with state of the art equipment.
some evidence shows (anecdotal evidence) suggests some athletes prefer plain environment with minimal equipment.
THE INFLUENCE OF THE COACH, TEACHER OR INSTRUCTOR ON MOTIVATION
Competitive climate
athletes with the highest ability will receive the most attention and are expected to win. This will then lead to a decrease in effort from other athletes as they are expected to fail due to there ability level in comparison with those higher.
Athletes in an environment where the main focus is the outcome
Those with the highest ability will usually recieve attention such as Usain bolt as the media expect him to win every major competition. this is an outcome-orientated climate
they may feel worried if they make mistakes as they may be punished
Mastery climate
Reward
using rewards that focus on individual improvement rather than comparing levels to other athletes
Grouping
giving athletes oppotunity to work in groups so that they develop skills in a group based environment
authority
giving athletes control over monitoring and evaluation.
Evalutation
focuisng on an individuals effort and improvements
task
having a range of tasks that require the athlete to participate in learning and decision making
focus on mastery of tasks. . many benfitis such as increased intrinsic motivation.
Timing
timing activities effectively so that all of the above conditions can interact successfully
ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION
NAF athletes
avoid failure as much as possible
Prefer playing against a poor opponent. as they are guaranteed success. or an opponent so good they are granted failure.
they avoid competing against worthy competitors who are better or equally as they fear failure.
perform worse when being evaluated by others
they attribute performance to external factors such as (luck, weather, referee)

those who need to achieve
strive for success and keep going when things go wrong
they like challenging but realistic goals to be set
value feedback from others to help become successful
