Most children develop multiple attachments, although there is a debate as to whether they are all equal
Attachments develop in four key stages:
Pre-attachment phase (birth - 3 months)
Indiscriminate attachment phase (3 - 7/8 months)
Discriminate attachment (7/8 months onwards)
Multiple attachments (9 months onwards)
Shaffer and Emerson: Longitudinal study; 87% had two attachments, 39% of prime attachments were not to the primary carer

The role of the father
Bowlby believes that children have one primary attachment figure, usually the mother, although he admitted that it could also be with the father
Mothers have been seen as more able to show sensitive responsiveness, but it seems men are just as capable of displaying this
