consisted of:
- immortals (kings bodyguard) 1000 and they were elite
- persian/median infantry
- foot soldiers (satrapial contingents)
- cavalry (ASABARA)
- spearmen
- archers

P infantry wore tunics, iron-scaled armour, carried wicker shields (P dress inferior to greeks)
