The Purposes of Schooling
Political
All goals of the American public education system are politically determined
This leads to problems such as programs like Race to The Top (RTT), Common Core and No Child Left Behind. These legislative decisions can disadvantage schools in impoverish neighborhoods and undercut the economic and social goals of schooling
#
Political goals of schooling were historically focused on patriotic values and civic engagement and understanding of government operations. However, statistical analyses have shown that there is a low national voter turnout and students graduate with only a passive understanding of citizenship
Parents do not always agree with legislative decisions and can force a school to shut down or change drastically by removing their children with the use of voucher programs and school choice
#
However, this choice can disadvantage poorer students and diminish the idea of equality of opportunity
Social
Individual Socialization
Social control and order: students are indoctrinated with political goals that adhere to authority and obedience to the law -- diminishing crime rates and creating community
.
Students will eventually be able to work effectively and collaboratively in the workplace
#
Child Welfare & Health
Regulation of sexual education, recreation and diet; implementation of school nurses and lunch programs
#
Community Building
Auditoriums are communal hubs, students participate in extra curricular activities and are engaged in civic participation and community outreach
#
Economic
Schooling prepares students for the global market place and the workforce
Human Capital Theory suggests that putting money into schooling benefits all of society
Economic principles of consumer participation in the marketplace
Students have an opportunity to compete in the job market and achieve social mobility
#
Teachers unions were created to negotiate fair wages and realistic regulations of the profession
Wages are often determined by standardized test scores; teachers instructing in poor performing neighborhoods are underpaid
#
Historically the moral compasses of society, teachers were upheld to the upmost standards and were very conservative. After the industrial revolution they became the personal crusaders of equal opportunistic education and played many many roles in defending every aspect of the lives of students
