Colours?
Black - Everything would stand out against this
White - a bit boring
Bright colour e.g. cyan - could be a bit overwhelming
pale colour - could be a good alternative, a nice background colour which is less stark than the black and doesn't draw attention away from the site itself
Layout?
Banner along top, logo in front centre overlapping banner slightly, remainder of page divided into topics and whatnot
Boxes spread out over page with different topics leading to separate pages, with logo in centre and boxes spreading from that
Vertical navigation bar with logo along the top and photo slideshow in centre
Fonts
Simplistic fonts - so as to not draw away from the topic of the website - the work
Fancy fonts - jazz it up a bit
