Teacher uses a little rhyme or phrase to get the student's attention without singling him or her out. For example: criss-cross applesauce, sit like me *Rhyme should include physical movement as well. Or: tiggle tiggle toc toc, boogley boogley toc toc, tiggley toc, boogley toc, tiggley, boogley toc.
If behavior continues the teacher can ask that child a question specifically to bring him or her back to focus.
If student becomes even more disruptive the teacher can address his or her behavior specifically and remind him or her about student expectations in the classroom.
If student gets even more out of hand, s/he might need to sit outside of the group with the teacher who is not leading at the moment.
Student returns to focus, but still needs little cues and reminders every so often. The student might need the teaching not leading at the moment to sit next to him or her to stay on track.
