Special Education Process By Deqa Ahmed
Strategies for helping struggling students
Small Group Work: based off of the results, I put students in similar groups together and either enrich or reteach. I am able to monitor and assist struggling students.
Centers: groups are created based of off different abilities (high, medium, low student) to help with peer learning. Centers cater to the different learning styles and the needs of students.
Scaffolding: I will break down the concept and help students build off of each one. I use prior knowledge, model examples, preteach key vocabulary, I teach a concept and have students repeat it in their own word to their partner. During this time I am able to monitor and listen to what students are saying
Cater to all Learning Styles: incorporate visuals, text, hands on activities, etc to cater to all students and their learning styles
Simplify instructions: I try to keep instructions very simple and keep the instructions on the board so students can use it for reference.
Chunk: for struggling student break down the assignment at hand and allow them to build off of one complete part.
Peer Teach: students sometimes learn best from each other. Allowing time for peer teaching allows them to socialize and learn from each other.
Technology: use iPads and tablets in class to help with extra practice and accommodate student (ei. audio book, video, etc)
Be There: simply being there for my students. be supportive, words of encouragement, highlight their growth and improvements. do not discourage them.
