Why the Japanese attacked Southeast Asia
At that time, they had also invaded China and was at war with them
They needed to invade Malaya to replenish their resources in their war with China
On the way there, they went past Thailand and in exchange for Japan bypassing Thailand, they provided resources for the Japanese army.
From the treaty of Versailles(after WW I ended and Japan was one of the allies), the Japanese were given lesser chance to grow their army as compared to Britain and America
This made them want to show the rest of the world that they were "a force to be reckoned with"

Yamashita bluffed General Percival and told him that his army would arrive in 100 days
However, they came in 77 days, catching general Percival off guard

They fought at Fort Canning Hill and even though General Percival had the upper hand, he decided to pull back, allowing the Japanese to invade Malaya
