Shifting Identity Assignment Ideas
Truman Show
Sound
music
at the start of the film, the music is calm however at the end of the film, the music becomes frantic and suspenseful.
diegetic sound of cameras zooming and moving
camera angles
at the start of the film, we see the same camera angles constantly - for example the newspaper booth - however, towards the end, the cameras are moving into awkward angles to try and capture what Truman is doing - trying to look for him instead of knowing for certain where he is.
flash backs
shows the change in Truman over the years - for example the struggle the actors had trying to keep Truman inside the island and not go adventuring.
Birds Eye
At the start of the film,
Dead Dingo
analogy between main character and dingo
dingo is the "old" version of the main character - caged and put on display
When Charlie goes to the zoo, he has a realisation that things could be better - this is shown when he compares himself to the caged dingo
Slang/colloquial language
Shifting tones between the narrative speech and the thoughts of the characters.
switching between third person and colloquial
repetition
When we are introduced to what Charlie's life was like at school, the first three lines is the repetition of authority figures telling Charlie off
this shows that through authority figures having a negative impact on Charlie in his childhood, Charlie was shaped to think that any authority figure (particularly white) doesn't like him and therefore he feels that he is not wanted in the community.
Repetition of the thought that Charlie and the other Aboriginals are unwanted in the white society of Perth
Flash backs
Talks about Charlie and his siblings witnessing their father (white and drunk) murdering their mother (aboriginal)
Talks about Charlie trying to run away
Talks about the bullying Charlie and his friends went through at school
Similarities
isolation
lack of privacy
Trapped
Dead Dingo - shown through analogy of dingo and main character
Choices influenced by other characters
Truman Show - seen through the scenes showing the people behind the scenes of the Truman Show
Example - when Christof is trying to turn Truman back to the "island" and orders an employee to turn up the wind
Example - when Truman tries to leave via a bus and the bus driver stalls that bus which makes Truman go back home
Example - when Truman's dad "falls overboard" and "dies" at "sea", Truman has a fear of water which makes Truman stay at home rather than adventuring like he wants to.
Dead Dingo - seen through the flashbacks
Example: when Charlie and his siblings witness their mother's death at the hands of their drunk white father
Example - when Charlie is being told off by teachers and as a result he does not like teachers
Example: when Charlie is being bullied at school by the whites and as a result he and his friends get in trouble.
