Summative
used to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.

Formative
is the process of gathering evidence of student learning. Teacher provides feedback and adjusts instructions strategies to better accommodate student and increase achievement.

used to evaluate student learning progress and determine if they are on track on performing well on future assessments such as standardized tests or end of course exams.

Diagnostic

Assessments are very important and beneficial in many ways. They help determine if the students are meeting the educational goals, if not teachers are to implement new strategies to help those students meet the goal.
Assessments serve for multiple purposes such as determining the appropriate class placement, selecting the appropriate curriculum for student, and notifying parents of the student's progress.
