The Use of Flattery
Quote 1: (1.7.56-58)
Lady Macbeth:
“When you durst do it, then you were a man; / And to be much more than what you were, you would / Be so much more the man”
Macbeth also responds well to flattery from the female characters. The first quotation describes how Lady Macbeth is complimenting his manliness when he comes up with the plan to murder the king. The next quote shows how Lady Macbeth was pleased with his upgraded status. Ultimately, this made Macbeth, even more, power hungry. Having his wife compliment him causes him to want to continue on the same path despite the possible consequences. This then leads him to make choices that cause him to gain and lose power quickly.
Quote 2: (1.5.62-63)
Lady Macbeth:
“Great Glammis, worthy Cawdor, / Greater than both by the all-hail hereafter!”
