News Values
News values are the criteria
for which we use to decide if a story is
newsworthy
(important). What we determine is newsworthy depends on the time in history, what is important to the people, or culture etc.
Free press and freedom
is something we take for granted, we have the freedom to do what we want (even if it offends others). We have freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of sexuality etc.
Agenda of the News:
Looking at the way its framed, constantly we see that news about Maori matters aren't addressed in a way that is aimed at Maori, more specifically, Pakeha audiences.
Maori Representation
Gang Violence
Newshub:
The way gang members are portrayed in the media is heavily skewed towards Maori being the main gang-members (and in most cases, it's as if Maori are the only people who can be gang-members due to constant reinforcement and representation of these Maori people).
Waitangi Day
Media Coverage:
Waitangi Day always stirs controversy within the public sphere. A mix of cultural tension, political apathy and media coverage makes it even more of an event which is more of a
headache
compared to a
national celebration.
Mainstream Media
Pakeha vs. Maori Audience:
Waitangi Day is supposed to be a day where we celebrate a national holiday based upon our most important founding document. Instead it becomes a political and racial contest between Maori matters and Pakeha perspectives on theses matters.
Waitangi Day controversies
Social Ladder:
Within all aspects of society, Maori are consistently ranked at the bottom of the chain. This pattern isn't any different for Maori representation in news Media. Maori matters don't tend to be addressed in a positive light - instead we see that Maori are more negatively represented when they do get air time on the news.
Maori News -> Treaty claims, Gang culture, violence, poverty, crime etc.
Indigenous 'terror'
Racialised Moral Panic:
Maori are going to turn on the population. They are already violent, have the highest number of incarcerations among any ethnic group in NZ and the stats, headlines etc. are always portrayed on NZ media.
Symbolic Violence:
Symbolic violence is violence which is portrayed through the media which targets and generalizes a specific group of people. This is a common term used in regards to Maori representation in the News/& Media.
Media necropower:
Shows how Maori are represented in the media, and how they will stay represented in the media. As a group at the bottom of the pit. Due to colonization Maori have been at a disadvantage in society ever since.
Maori Media
Indigenous presencing:
Indigenous presencing is drawing back the inconsistencies that have occurred for Maori representation in the Media. And providing a plot form in the Media for Maori matters. We are no longer marginalized, and allowing ourselves more time in mainstream media with other more dominant and well-recognized groups of society.
Maori Television Serice (Since 2003):
Maori TV is an example of Indigenous presencing as they are a PSB who represents Maori culture and the Maori people in a more positive manner, a channel which is entirely devoted to Maori language, film, TV and lifestyle With the aim to educate and enhance the Modern-day Maori culture.
