Impostor Syndrome in tech
Software development is a field that is filled with experiences of failure.
Sometimes impostor syndrome is partially the fault of the company. Sometimes, documentation and onboarding suck. Sometimes, new devs are left to "sink or swim" with little support.
Sometimes Impostor Syndrome may be a symptom of organizational ineffectiveness - putting a new employee where they aren't in the position to succeed, or not clearly indicating the expectations that they have.

To be an engineer you need: 1) a willingness to feel totally lost
2) the confidence that you will eventually reach the solution

Confidence is not competence. This is unfortunately a common misconception.

It's fun to watch an impostor, but it isn't fun to be one.

Comparing my experience to others.
Impostor Syndrome is feeling like you don't belong.
I'm a white male. I'm a part of the vast majority.
What is the experience like for everyone else?
Quick question. Have you ever been the only person of your nationality, color, gender, or sexual orientation in a room of more than five people? Was it at work?
Females and PoC often experience "1000 papercuts"
Have you ever been hit on via github?

Didn't realize how draining code switching was til I was in a room of devs who looked like me for the 1st time, and I could finally breathe

Has anyone assumed that you can't write code because of the clothes that you wear to a conference?

Conference Empathy
Always assume that the person you're talking to is an expert in the subject to wish to discuss, especially if they don't look like you.
Read and understand codes of conduct.
If you see something, say something.
Follow social rules
No feigning surprise.
No well-actually's
No subtle -isms

Be inclusive
Pacman - I got this one from Eric Holscher at Write the Docs. We tend to naturally form a circle when we’re standing around talking about a topic. It takes a special kind of courage to approach a ring of backs. Instead, as you’re standing in the ring, open up space between you and a neighbor to leave room for a new person to slip in and add to the conversation. You’ll be surprised by how much difference this little bit of body language makes in making your informal conversations more interesting and varied.
Treat people like human beings.
Try to be aware of your eye contact and body language, especially with people that aren't like you.
