Care Leavers
This is someone who has been looked after by local authority for at least thirteen weeks since the age of fourteen and wo was in care on their sixteenth birthday.
They are at greater risk of experiencing negative outcomes than there peers e.g. unemployment, homelessness, lack of a support network (Biehal et al, 1994)
But research shows a diversity of outcomes for care leavers (Wade and Munro, 2008)

Local Authorities - different stages of developing provision; emphasis on tailored support; levels of financial support (income top ups, weekly allowance, repayment of student loans); contributions made for books/course materials/ travel; supplied or payed for laptop
Care leavers experiences
-
Awareness of support - bound made aware of support is very important to care leavers. "I thought that the minute i turned 18....that would be it. Then I wouldn't get any support at all"
Timing of Information - "When you start your course, the only worries, you know, if you call them worries it be doing your course. Its the content of the course and the actual work...that's what you have come to University to do. All the rest is superficial and it should be sorted before you turn up"

However a lot are still living in private accommodation rather than halls which makes it harder to make friends and feel involved in things.
