LIVER, GALL BLADDER, PANCREAS & LARGE INTESTINE
FUNCTIONS
- METABOLIC DETOXIFICATION - Substances are metabolised to less toxic forms to prevent excessive accumulation and adverse effects
- PROTEIN SYNTHESIS - Production of proteins (plasma proteins - albumin & globulins) deamination (removal of ammonia from amino acids)
- HAEMOSTASIS - Produces clotting factors necessary for coagulation, prothrombin, fibrinogen, clotting factors, Vitamin K (fat soluble vitamin) is needed from diet - relies on bile to be absorbed
- STORAGE - Ferritin, B12, Vit D, Vit A, Vit E, Vit K
- BILE PRODUCTION - Produced by hepatocytes
- Metabolism of nutrients - Produces phospholipids from fats (cell membranes) - Carbs - Glycogen (glyconeolysis) & Glyconeogenesis
-
GALL BLADDER
-
BILE - Flows from the liver through the right and left hepatic duct into the common hepatic duct - Then flows through the cystic duct into the gallbladder where it is concentrated and stored
-
-
PANCREAS
EXOCRINE FUNCTION - Digestion - Acinar cells - trypsin, lipase, amylase - Duodenum via pancreatic duct & into the common bile duct at the ampulla of vater
AQUEOUS SECRETIONS - Sodium, Potassium, Bicarbonate, Chloride - alkaline
