study of sounds of a particular language, how they are produced and how they are described.
phonemes- smallest unit of sound in a language. when a phoneme is replaced by another phoneme a new word can be formed.
homophone- same sound, different spelling of the word. (e.g their, there)
homonym- same sound, same or different spelling. (e.g. pear, pair)
homograph- same or different sound, same spelling. (e.g. lie, untruthful, lie, lie down)
heteronym- different sound (pronunication), same spelling. (e.g. tear, in the eye, tear, rip)

semantic ambiguity- meaning of words are flexible, have different meaning.
semantic and/or lexical field- deliberate grouping of words with related meaning in a text. e.g. topic of shopping, money, shoes, friends, travel.
figurative language- language that uses words or expressions with a meaning different from its literal
PRAGMATICS-
meaning of what people write or say isnt always as clear out as it might seem. read between the lines

function words- fixed words, carry little meaning in themselves, have an important role in connecting words
