Digestive System
Large Intestine
Ascending Colon
Here, bacteria digest waste to release vitamins. The wall of the ascending colon also absorbs water, vitamins, and other nutrients and releases them in bloodstream. Carries feces from the cecum to the transverse colon.
-
Descending Colon
Stores waste until they are ready to be eliminated. Also allows for the absorption of vitamins, minerals and water.
Transverse Colon
This is the longest region in the colon and crosses the abdomen transversely. Here bacteria continue to ferment waste to release vitamins and nutrients to the bloodstream.
Small Intestine
-
-
Duodenum
Chemical breakdown of food occurs here as enzymes from the pancreas and the liver combine with food matter.
-
Liver
Processes nutrients that are absorbed by the small intestine. Bile is secreted from this organ to aid in the digestion of fat. Detoxifies harmful chemicals in the body and also secretes a variety of different chemicals required by the body.

Pancreas
Secrets digestive enzymes into the duodenum that helps chemically break down protein, fat, and carbohydrates. The pancreas also makes insulin which is the main hormone that allows for the metabolism of sugars.
Stomach
Holds food so that it can be mixed with enzymes that allow for the chemical breakdown of matter. Empties into the small intestine.
Mouth
The mouth is the start of the digestive tract. Physical breakdown of food occurs in the form of chewing. Saliva also aids in the chemical breakdown of food.
