To have mathematical literacy, a student must have skills in the following areas:
1) Mathematical thinking and reasoning: Being able to ask and answer math-related questions
2) Mathematical argumentation: Understand proofs, chains of arguments, heuristics, and creating and expressing mathematical arguments
3) Mathematical communication: The ability to understand and express mathematical knowledge
4) Modeling: Translate mathematical concepts into physical forms and reflect upon, analyze, and critique models
5) Problem posing and solving: The ability to create and solve mathematical problems
6) Representation: Decoding, encoding, interpreting, distinguishing between, and translating different mathematical concepts
7) Symbols: Understand and use mathematical language
